I’ve been thinking a lot about Crito Records lately. When I first developed the idea of starting a small, independent label I really had no idea what I was doing, and I had one hundredth of the experience I would actually need to help produce and expose quality bands to a larger audience of like-minded, DIY driven people. All I knew was that I wanted to help people make music and help draw more attention to that particular artist or group of artists.
At the time, it really didn’t work out, it just wasn’t the right time. I felt it was a failure that I would simply admit and move on in a very public manner.
Since moving back to Flint, Michigan, taking on the role of club manager at the Flint Local 432, touring the country multiple times, making several new friends across this awesome country, sleeping several nights on strangers’ floors or in a moving van, and promoting countless shows, I feel like there isn’t a better time than now.
There are so many fantastic bands around Flint and Michigan in general that simply are not getting the level of attention they deserve. I feel that having a platform where people can download great music for free, share it with friends, connect with the artists, hopefully provide financial support to the musicians, will increase the capacity to create a strong music scene in Flint, Michigan and the surrounding area. All of this coming from a community that knows something or two about working hard and making something of the highest quality.
I want Crito to be sort of a Quote Unquote Records, IfYouMakeIt.com, or Start Something NJ organization. Something that highlights friends’ bands that are making something really rad, different, and new worth paying attention to. Of course it’s going to completely embody the DIY spirit. This isn’t for money or for fame, it’s about building a strong community and improving the quality of life in this city.
I’ve got a lot of work to do making this website work again. If you’re reading this, I hope you’re going to be a part of this journey.
With that being said, I’m taking another step by promoting my first show under the Crito Records name. It’s this Saturday, July 27th and includes Foxing, Warren Franklin & The Founding Fathers, and two others I’m waiting to confirm. If you’re in Michigan, I hope you can make it out to the show! It’s going to be a really good time, it’s only $5, and you’d help out some great bands.
Let’s do this!
